man works for commands, system calls, library routines, I/O devices, or administrative files.
Important command-line options for man:
man -s section topic e.g: man -s 4 passwd
man -k keyword (equivalent to apropos) (man config file could be /etc/man.config)
MANPATH (a variable) - list of where man should search.
info = another manual page sytem.
whatis: One-line command summaries whatis is almost identical to apropos or man -k but it requires a command name as an argument. e.g: whatis cat cat (iv) concatenate and display
The whatis command is equivalent to man -f on most systems.
Before running whatis the first time on your system, you'll want to run makewahtis at /usr/libexec/makewhatis for creating the whatis database.
